Mill Hill School Shout

Message from the Headmaster

The falling leaves, the recent weather and the changing of the clocks leave little doubt that autumn is very much upon us.  I hope that all members of the School enjoyed their half-term break, including those who represented Mill Hill so well on the highly successful junior colts rugby tour (which saw excellent wins against very strong teams from Monmouth and Christ’s College, Brecon), the golf trip to Portugal and the CCF cadre camp.  As term gets underway, there is much work ahead, not least for the Fifth Form as they prepare for their November GCSE and GCSE-mock examinations and the Upper Sixth Form, many of whom are still working on their all-important UCAS applications.   The season of parents’ evenings is also about to begin in earnest, starting with those for the Lower Sixth Form on Tuesday 1 November and for the Fourth Form on Wednesday 9  November.  In addition, there is a ‘Planning for the Sixth Form’ event on Thursday 3 November for parents of Fifth Form pupils (this will then be followed up by a second event on Wednesday 7 December when the focus will be on Sixth Form opportunities and AS options, with Fifth Form pupils and parents having the chance to listen to, and speak with, Heads of Department and current Sixth Form pupils about the various AS subjects on offer).   The lecture series resumes on Thursday 10 November,  when General Sir Mike Jackson will be delivering a talk entitled ‘General Reflections’.  The following day, the School assembles for one of the most solemn events in our calendar, the Call to Remembrance,  when we honour those who have died in war and conflict since 1914.  The gate of honour ceremony is always a poignant occasion, and you would all be very welcome to join us.  On  lighter note, the House Play festival takes place in the week commencing 14 November, with the final on Thursday 17 November.  There is also a busy programme of sport in store and I have no doubt that everyone will be ready for the short break afforded by the exeat  weekend which begins on Friday 18 November, with the School being closed for the weekend and boarders being permitted to return on the evening of Sunday 20 November.

Rugby achievement

On Sunday 9th October, three members of the Remove 'A' team, Alex Conn (McClure – back) Aston Lester (School House – forward) and Joseph Gilbert (Atkinson - forward), representing their club side, Saracens, won the Under 15 title at the annual Windsor Junior Rugby Tournament. This completed back to back wins for the team who were also last year’s winners at U14 level. The invitational event for the Under 13 to Under 16 age groups is staged at Home Park, situated under the imperious shadow of Windsor Castle. Although Her Majesty was not at home on this occasion, we are reliably informed those that were present witnessed a full day of fast flowing and closely fought rugby. Mill Hill’s fourth U15 Saracens player, Silas Jefferies was unavailable for the event due to injury.

Swimming success

Emily Dean’s (Weymouth) was successful in the Epic Events Ullswater 500m swim which took place this summer.

The race, which was open to all age groups, was swum in Ullswater lake on Sunday 10th July and Emily was 4th overall and the first placed female swimmer – winning a cash prize!

1st VII Runners-up in Barnet Netball Tournament

The 1st VII competed in the Barnet Borough Netball Championships in the first half of term with convincing victories in the group stages over Queen Mary’s School, The Mount, Compton and Finchley Catholic High School.

Having reached the semi finals, the team faced Finchley Catholic School for a second time, and with another safe victory met Ashmole School in the final. Here they faced their toughest opposition yet in a game which was quick, exciting and intense. The girls fought really hard to equalise, though sadly victory was just out of their reach, the final score being 4-5 to Ashmole.

Special mention must go to Sarah Peters for her consistent shooting and the solid defensive wall comprising Heloise Brittain, Georgia Green and Tali Webster.

We look forward to more Netball success in the Spring Term.
