Message from the Headmaster
By the time you receive this, we shall know the result of the general election. There has been much political talk around the School in recent weeks, and the powerful, informed and committed performances delivered by pupils at our Big Debate were a real highlight of the past week. In addition, the fact that so many pupils came to listen to and consider the arguments of those representing the three main parties would seem to suggest that media talk of young people’s disengagement from politics is misguided, at least where Millhillians are concerned.
Aside from the election, it has been a busy fortnight at the School, the CCF putting in an outstanding performance at last week’s Annual General Inspection and our boys’ and girls’ sports teams also doing themselves great credit. There have also been some outstanding examination performances in drama and music. And, of course, there has been a great deal of hard work going on as pupils prepare for the examinations. With only a few weeks now to go, I would like to wish them all every success for their final weeks of revision.
The Big Debate
On Thursday 29th April The Large was packed with an audience from Belmont and Mill Hill to hear Sixth Formers who were representing the three main political parties present their manifestos.
Having drawn the order of presentations from a hat, each party had seven minutes to talk about key areas of policy. Education, Health, Immigration and Defence featured heavily in all three presentations.

Presentation on 'e-safety'
At the end of April, Paul James of Barbarani Education Services ran two sessions (both in The Large) on “E-Safety” (e.g., safe and appropriate use of mobile phones, the internet, social networking sites, etc.). During the presentations, Paul spoke to pupils from the 4th Form and the Removes and then there was an event for parents of pupils from across the Foundation (Grimsdell, Belmont and Mill Hill). Paul spoke about safeguarding and pupil welfare both in the “virtual world” and also in the “real world”, identifying the way technological advances have changed the way people interact with one another, highlighting specific areas for concern and then setting out some ideas on how parents and pupils might make sure that they make use of the emerging technology both safely and responsibly.
The CCF have been rather busy ...
On Saturday 24th April a group of senior cadets went to the Cenotaph to take part in the St. George’s Day parade with 300 other cadets from London District representing the three services. Jack Bedford of Weymouth acted as Colours Bearer for the first time at the Cenotaph with the MHS CCF colours. The following day the Corps of Drums represented the School and the Fusiliers at the Barnet Scouts parade. They led the parade and played immaculately as always. The Deputy Lieutenant of Barnet took the salute from the Drum Major Hugh Longley as the parade finished.
Wednesday 28th April the AGI took place at MHS. The weather was extremely kind and the cadets looked fantastic as Air Commodore Cooper inspected the contingent. As can be seen from the photograph, the cadets had spent a considerable amount of time polishing and ironing their kit. The Corps of Drums put on a very professional performance as always and the Guard of Honour made up of senior NCOs were incredibly smart. The Senior Cadet, Arthur Fokschaner, did a great job commanding the parade, while the afternoon activities were very expertly delivered by the Fifth Form and Sixth Form NCOs in all three sections.
Rounders success v Chigwell
The Senior Girls enjoyed a great start to the rounders season, dominating the game against Chigwell and winning before they had even batted in the 2nd innings, 18 rounders to 4. Great performances from Olivia Brown, Despi Theochari, Layken Senior with the bat, superb fielding from Olivia Brown and Despi Theochari with safe hands in the deep, a classic bowl and catch from Priya Visavadia and great reflexes from Alex Living as backstop to Layken Senior to gain runouts were all highlights of the match. Jessica Perkins, Izzy MacCallum and Tabitha Mainstone also greatly contributed to the vast score difference with tactical running to gain both half and full rounders. Well done to all the girls in this first game and first victory of the season. Player of the Match: Despi Theochari
