Mill Hill School Shout

Message from the Headmaster

A very warm welcome to the first edition of School Shout, Mill Hill’s new, regular e-newsletter. The idea for the Shout came partly as a result of comments made in last year’s parents’ questionnaire and we hope that it will provide a means of keeping you all informed of developments at the School, forthcoming events and, perhaps most important, the many achievements and successes of our pupils. Initially, we shall be publishing the Shout once a fortnight. If you have any comments or suggestions about it, please do contact Karen Willetts by email .  Your views are very important to us.

The Easter holiday saw a number of very successful trips, including a visit by Sixth Form artists to New York, language trips to Munich and Santiago and a highly successful cricket tour to India. Another holiday event of note was Adam Rossington’s debut for the Middlesex Second XI cricket side, in which he scored 161 in his first innings – an extraordinary achievement. Congratulations go to Adam and to all those who represented the School so well whilst on their travels.

I hope you will enjoy this and future editions of the Shout. Please do let us know what you think of it.

With best wishes
Dr Dominic Luckett, Headmaster

Another Millhillian wins prestigious scholarship

David Foster-Aileru (L6 McClure) has won a scholarship as part of the Preisträgerprogramm to fund a two-week stay at Kuxhaven in northern Germany this summer. Following the similar success of Jonathan Bertulis-Fernandes last year, this is another superb achievement.

New Guides for Higher Education

Miss Lesley Sharples, Director of Sixth Form & Head of Business Education, has recently published some Guidance Booklets for Higher Education that will be of use to both pupils and parents. Miss Sharples will be talking about these at her forthcoming parents’ evening on 4th May so these have been posted on the web site and she will refer to these on the evening.

Mill Hill School Foundation Walk to School Week

Tuesday 4th May to Saturday 8th May

As part of our ongoing commitment across all three Foundation schools to promote environmental awareness and healthy living, Belmont and the first two years at Mill Hill (4ths and Removes) will be holding a “Walk To School Week” during the week of the General Election.

Whilst we do appreciate that most of our pupils do not live within walking distance of the School and recognise that the morning journey is necessarily uphill, we are hoping that as many of our pupils as possible might take part by trying out one of the following:
• Getting off the bus a stop or two early and walking the last five or ten minutes of the trip.
• Asking to be dropped off somewhere a little farther away from School (e.g., the bottom of Farm Road outside Burton Bank boarding house or on Wills Grove near the Medical Centre) and walking the remainder of the way.
• Walking the first mile of the journey home (i.e., going downhill) before then getting picked up by parents and/or getting on the bus.
• Walking to Mill Hill East with a friend on the way home from School before completing the journey home using London Underground.

Please support your child (or children) in getting involved in some way with this initiative.

Young Enterprise 'Lunch Finale'

Over the course of this academic year a group of Remove pupils have been running their own business as part of the national Young Enterprise scheme.

To celebrate their achievements and bolster their revenue, the Young Enterprise group hosted a lunch ‘Finale’ in the refectory on the last day of the Spring term. This featured a cake sale followed by a raffle draw, for which tickets were sold at only £1. There were a broad range of prizes that were won, including tickets to Saracens vs Harlequins, a behind the scenes tour of Wimbledon (tennis rather than the tootball club) and a brand new iPhone.

The event was very successful and a fitting end to the pupils' Young Enterprise operations. A percentage of the company’s overall profit will be donated to Alford House. Well done to all those involved!

A busy time for Mill Hill cricket ...

The Easter holidays saw a very successful cricket tour to the Golden Triangle in India. The 18-strong party played some very tough cricket in extreme conditions, conditions that we're not used to in the UK; 40 degree heat was the daily norm. Although the actual results went against us, the squad improved game after game and they produced their best cricket towards the end of the trip. They also enjoyed all aspects of the cultural differences between the two countries, the visit to the Taj Mahal and even the elephant ride! Thanks to Mr Hutchinson, Mr Plummer and Mr Parrish for their constant enthusiasm and humour, making it a most memorable trip.

Some more exciting cricket news is that on the 13th, 14th and 15th April, Adam Rossington (L6 Cedars) made his debut for Middlesex CCC 2nd XI against Northampton CCC 2nd XI at the County Ground in Northampton. He batted at number 5 and scored 161, having come into bat when his side was 24 for 3. This was an incredible performance and has really made the 1st XI selectors aware of his ability. He followed his first innings score with 35 not out in the second.
