Message from the Headmaster
As we reach the end of another long and successful term, I would like to thank all our parents for their support over the past months.
A great deal has been achieved in and out of the classroom and, whilst there is much hard work ahead in the New Year, I think we can all look forward to 2011 with great enthusiasm and optimism.
Meanwhile, I would like to wish all our families a peaceful and very happy Christmas.
Ben Calder selected for London and South East Divisional rugby squad
Yet another Millhillian is proving himself on the sports field with Fifth Former, Ben Calder, being selected for the London and South East Division squad: the next step up from County level. Ben took part in a game against 30-40 other players recently and is now trialling in games against the Midlands, South West England and the North, to put himself forward for South England where, if selected will go on to trial for England.
Mill Hill hasn’t had a pupil at this stage in this age group for a long time, the last being Old Millhillian Tom Lindsay who got his second start for Wasps last Saturday against Exeter..
Ben has been the 1st XV scrum half this season at the age of 15 which is quite unusual in itself and has been nominated Man of the Match on two occasions this season. He was awarded his full colours on Saturday night at the Annual Rugby Club Dinner.
'Secret Millionaire' delivers lecture
The Sir Titus Salt lecture was presented by Nick Leslau on Wednesday 24th Novemeber. Nick is an Old Millhillian and an entrepreneurial success, who is best known as a ‘Secret Millionaire’ following his recent appearance on the Channel 4 TV series. The evening began with Nick providing guidance on how to run a successful business. His main advice was to not be shy in business, and along with various other valuable lessons, the audience was enriched with extremely useful information.
Nick also discussed the story of how he has made a name for himself, from being appointed as the manager of a company at the age of eighteen to his present status as a member of the Bank of England Property Forum. He was without doubt, an inspiration to many young business students in the audience. CLICK HERE to read the full story.

'Hot Topics' debate
Lunchtime on 30th November saw the staging of an eagerly awaited ‘Hot Topics’ debate on university tuition fees in the Large. No topic is currently more ‘hot’ politically but nonetheless Mill Hill’s pupils and staff conducted a peaceful if impassioned discussion of the issue.
Mr Searby and Ben Glassberg (L6) proposed a motion arguing that the current cap of £3000 on tuition fees had to be raised as free or subsidised higher education is no longer a possibility in a country whose public finances are in near ruin.
Mr Heddle and Elspeth Lawson (U6) opposed this, expressing the fear that the university system would be irreparably damaged by such an unfair hike in fees and that generations of pupils will end up in debt. The audience participated with some very well judged questions and opinions, and considerable comparison was drawn in the debate between the British and American methods of funding higher education. The utter relevance of this topic to our pupils made this to be a most heartfelt clash of views. The motion was defeated by four votes, perhaps a closer result than might have been anticipated given the constituency.
Tickets still available for Romeo and Juliet
The MHS Opera and Ballet Society still have some tickets available for the English National Ballet's performance of Romeo and Juliet on Saturday 15 January 2011, 2.30 pm.
The world's greatest love story is told through Nureyev's inventive choreography with sumptuous costumes and sets that transport you to the grandeur and bustle of Renaissance Venice. Prokofiev's exhilarating and memorable score played by the Orchestra of English National Ballet is the very heartbeat of this tragic tale of love and destiny. Rudolf Nureyev's award-winning production of Romeo & Juliet was especially created for English National Ballet in 1977 to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee. The Company has since performed it worldwide to critical acclaim.
Be the first to enjoy this classical production that promises to be a magical, memorable and unmissable Christmas treat.

4th Form pupils dissect political speeches
This term, 4th Form pupils have been exposed to a wide range of topics as part of the lunchtime Challenge Lecture series
In the most recent lecture, Deputy Head Peter McDonough delivered a presentation entitled Dissecting Political Speeches .
In the presentation, the group watched films of speeches by Hitler, Martin Luther King, Tony Blair and William Hague. The pupils were encouraged to analyse the speeches, taking account of context, setting, material and presentational skills. A detailed analysis was done of Tony Blair’s famous ‘ Peoples’ Princess ‘ speech. This was contrasted with William Hague’s television appearance of the same day. Looking at these two examples enabled the group to focus on the importance of tone, language and delivery when it comes to making a successful political speech.
