Mill Hill School Shout

Message from the Headmaster

Term has got off to a superb start and, as we bask in the unseasonable heat of the September sun, it seems hard to believe that half-term is fast approaching.  Those boys and girls who joined us at the start of the year seem to be settling in well, and I get a real sense that pupils in all year groups have embarked upon the term with great energy, enthusiasm and ambition.  Many of you will have been with us on Foundation Day and I hope that you enjoyed the day as much as I did.  It is always good to see parents and other family members at the School, and I hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join us for the many fixtures, lectures, concerts and other events which are due to take place this term.

Foundation Day 2011

In addition our annual Prizegiving ceremony, the School again enjoyed a full programme of events and tournaments at last week's Foundation Day.  Blessed with a day of Autumn sunshine, current pupils and parents, staff and invited guests mingled on Top Terrace, the Quad and the Sports Hall. Our traditional sporting events included netball and football tournaments, a swimming gala, and Rugby against The Leys.

Mill Hill School Chaplain, Rev Richard Warden, delivered the Service of Commemoration of Benefactors in the Chapel prior to Prizegiving in the Sports Hall where Dr Dominic Luckett delivered an inspiring report on the academic year 2010-11.

The School was delighted to welcome Guest of Honour Sir Roderic Lyne, Chairman of the Governors of Kingston University and Deputy Chairman of the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House.  Sir Roderic talked about the perils of obsessive concern with body image and material possessions. The Senior Monitors’ Vote of Thanks was ably delivered by Isobel McCallum and Ben Glassberg.

Our immensely talented Corps of Drums topped off the day by entertaining guests with an excellent display on Top Field.

Forthcoming event 'Unplugged': Wednesday 5th October, 6:30pm

Next Wednesday evening will see a Fourth Form band, Remove band and Upper Sixth Form band, along with solo acts from all year groups, provide an entertaining hour of musical talent.

Tickets for this event cost just £5 and proceeds will support both our Overseas Partnerships projects and so that guests can purchase refreshments, our Charity Cafe will be open during the evening.

Tickets can be pre-ordered through Oliver Galgut either by email or at the ticket desk in The Octagon during break and lunch times on Tuesday 4th October and Wednesday 5th October only.  All tickets must be paid for in cash on the door to gain entry.

The event takes place in the Patrick Troughton Theatre so seats are limited.  Book early to avoid disappointment!

Lecture Series 2011/12

This year's Lecture Series is as exciting as ever with guest speakers to include Poet Laureate, Sir Andrew Motion, and retired British Army Officer, General Sir Mike Jackson.

The next lecture is being delivered by Fleet Street journalist, Chris Roycroft Davis, who will give an honest insight into the mind of a journalist and ask: why does the media exist and could we do without it?  This lecture will take place on Tuesday 11th October at 6:30pm (doors open 6:00pm), in the Patrick Troughton Theatre.

All our lectures are free of charge.  Click here to view details of all our lectures or to book tickets through our online booking system, click here.
