Mill Hill School Shout

Message from the Headmaster

It is hard to believe that half term is already upon us, but I am sure that all members of the School are eagerly looking forward to a very well-deserved rest. It has certainly been an exceptionally busy few weeks, and there have been some truly memorable events. The sun shone for us on Foundation Day, and I know that many pupils, parents and guests greatly enjoyed listening to our Guest of Honour, Professor Dame Carol Black. We also started this year’s Lecture Series with a fascinating and engaging talk from Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys of Leicester University, who led us through his discovery of DNA fingerprinting and its subsequent practical applications.

Mill Hill’s Got Talent, the fundraising event for our partner school in Tamil Nadu, certainly lived up to its name and the quality of every one of the acts was exceptional. Continuing the musical theme, we enjoyed a wonderful House Music Competition last night, the worthy overall winner of which was Weymouth House. A full report will be in the next edition of School Shout. There have also been some good wins and superb performances in the sports fixtures that have taken place in the past weeks. Above all, the pupils have been studying hard and we have seen some outstanding academic work.

So, all in all, a very good start to the year, with a great deal to celebrate. I would like to wish the Fifth Form well for their mock examinations next month, and hope that their half-term revision goes well. I would also like to wish all our pupils a happy and refreshing half-term break.

Foundation Day 2010

A full programme of events, prizegiving and tournaments was enjoyed by well over 1000 people who joined us at Mill Hill for Foundation Day 2010 on Saturday 25th September, and current pupils and parents, staff, Old Millhillians and invited guests mingled on Top Terrace, the Quad and the Sports Hall.

Our traditional sporting events included netball and football tournaments, a swimming gala, a fives match against the Old Millhillians, and Rugby where a Mill Hill Colts side played The Leys. The Corps of Drums gave an excellent display on Top Field. Our new Chaplain, Rev Richard Warden delivered the Service of Commemoration of Benefactors in the Chapel.

Lecture Series gets off to gripping start

Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys, pictured here outside our science building, started our 2010-11 Lecture Series with a riveting account of the “eureka moment“ and subsequent development of DNA fingerprinting, and its vital importance in forensic science. Sir Alec is an excellent, entertaining speaker who not only explained to us how the science works, and underlined the serious implications for criminal cases – he also pointed out that it was this technique which proved beyond doubt that Bill Clinton was implicated in the Monica Lewinsky case! And it is not just proving guilt which is so important – many people have been able to prove their innocence through the use of genetic fingerprinting. Sir Alec’s lecture was given under the banner of the “Francis Crick Lecture”, and we had excellent feedback from the audience of pupils, parents, staff and guests who were thrilled to have this first-hand account of a discovery which has such global importance.

The next two lectures in the series promise to be equally engrossing. On 16th November journalist Linda Polman will present her controversial view that Western aid can actually prolong the conflicts instead of helping victims, based on her 20+ years reporting from war zones including Rwanda, Afghanistan, Sudan and Iraq. And in contrast, on 24th November we’re delighted to welcome Secret Millionaire star Nick Leslau – one of Britain’s wealthiest property tycoons – who will take a candid look at successes and failure with the aim of identifying what it is that characterises a successful business.

Netball Team crowned Borough Champions

Once again the 1st VII became Champions at last week’s Borough Tournament which was attended by 18 schools. Hosted at St James’ Catholic School, the team captained by Katie Newton, played impressive netball to win their group. The team then had convincing wins over London Academy (10-1) and Woodhouse (9-1) in the Quarter and Semi Finals before having an exceptional victory in the Final (6-2) against Ashmole.

Jessica Perkins and Georgia Green, defended particularly well and Francesca Taylor and Isobel MacCallum worked tirelessly in mid court making numerous interceptions. The 2nd VII also did well reaching the Quarter ~Final stages of the same competition.

Considering this term is predominantly a hockey term, this is a fantastic start for the girls and bodes well for the forthcoming season.

Mill Hill certainly has "Got Talent"

An extraordinary display of talent was enjoyed by all on Tuesday 5th October at our very own talent show. The evening began with a dramatic piano piece by Laurenz Boss who really set the very high standard for the evening.

Outstanding music performances were provided by: Max Ephson Clarke, Zara Prodromou, Katie Billingham, Amy Welch and Cassidy Hansen, Molly Duncan (pictured), Assume 59 (Alex Slade, Izzy List, Oliver Galgut, Alex Living, Tabby Mainstone, George DeSausmarez), Jack Clayton, Nathalie Kosky, Room 6 (Shahi Ghani, Chad Vigano & Daniel Stern), Rose Miller, and an energetic and entertaining dance by Chrissie Jaruchotiratanasakul & Pamela Penawou.

Harvest Festival

The excellent recent faith assemblies took as their unifying theme Harvest and Thanksgiving for Nature, and pupils delivered various informative presentations at each. The Christian assembly included the decoration of chapel with produce grown in the Mill Hill garden by our own Gardening Club (pictured), as well as handing out seasonal food at the end.

The Jewish assembly consisted of an innovative and creative film by Tommy Lennard on the Festival of Sukkot. It includes interviews with teaching staff, and also members of the public at a QPR v Millwall football match!

The Muslim assembly included a song, composed and written by pupils and the Hindu assembly focused on various Indian festivals of thanksgiving. These assemblies continue to inform and enrich our community life as we seek to understand and celebrate spiritual insights from different traditions.

Success at Swimming Gala

The boys' swim team had their first gala at the end of September against Charterhouse, a traditionally strong swimming school.

Although a loss in the U14 boys 37 points to 25, they performed very well under pressure against a well drilled swimming team. Highlights of their gala included 1st Place by Aston Lester in his Front Crawl and 2nd Place by Xerxes Panthakee in a very tight Breaststroke race.

The Remove boys performed outstandingly against the Charterhouse Intermediate team, which comprised of predominantly of 5th form boys. Highlights include 1st places for Niklas List in the Individual Medley, Backstroke and Butterfly and Jamie Noble continuing his unbeaten stint with another 1st for his 50m Breaststroke. The Medley Relay Team comprising of Gareth Kong, Niklas List, Finn Keenan and Jamie Noble had an amazing race, coming 1st in a nail biting finish. Overall the Remove Boys won the gala 32 points to 30.

Despite the senior boys losing 16 points to 11, there were some outstanding swims by swimming Captain, Sebastian Balcombe, coming 1st in both the 50m Front Crawl and his 50m Butterfly. Congratulations on his achievements and well done to all the boys involved.

An Evening of Law

29th September saw the Recital Hall being transformed into a Crown Court where students were invited to attend a Career Information Evening, hosted by seven legal Professionals.

Two QC's, a Barrister, two Lawyers, a Solicitor and a Legal Researcher all spoke to the students about the world of law and the processes needed to gain entry into the profession.  They outlined the differences in their respective roles, the highs and the lows, the financial rewards and gave an insight into a typical day.

The evening was very well supported and the pupils took the opportunity to fire questions to the panel.

The Careers Library holds all the literature that was available on the evening so pupils are encouraged to go along and pick up the leaflets if they are interested in this field.

Reception for Greek Community

On the evening of Tuesday 2nd November 2010 the Mill Hill School Foundation is hosting a reception for members of the Foundation's Greek community. All current parents, past parents and former pupils are welcome to join this event; an occasion when the Headmaster and Director of the Foundation Appeal will talk about Mill Hill and its illustrious history, recent achievements and exciting plans for the future. They will talk about the Foundation Appeal in general and specifically the A Better Chance Bursary scheme and the plans for future buildings around the Foundation.

This will be a gathering of one of our largest and strongest communities within Mill Hill where people with a common heritage and the shared experience of education at Mill Hill, will have a chance to reminisce, meet old friends, make new ones and an opportunity to network. Please do join us from 7.30 pm for what promises to be a most enjoyable occasion. CLICK HERE to book your place or email Nick Priestnall for further information.”
