Mill Hill School Shout

Message from the Headmaster

With examinations only a very few weeks away, academic matters are clearly the top priority for the majority of those in the School. I hope that their preparations continue to go well and that they are justly rewarded when the results are published later in the summer.

An early success was that of Jonathan Bertulis-Fernandes in the highly regarded Cicero international Classics Competition. Hugh Longley also deserves high praise for his fourth place in that competition, as do Al Stubbs and Miftah Ibrahim for their excellent performances in the Biology Olympiad. Hopefully, these triumphs are a harbinger of many great results to come in August. This edition of the School Shout also contains details of some wonderful drama performances and a number of excellent sports results, particularly in rounders and tennis, all of which only goes to show that, even at this time of year, there are a great many things going on at Mill Hill. Looking ahead, I am particularly looking forward to see as many parents as possible at the Valedictory Service for Upper Sixth Leavers on Thursday 27 May.

Millhillians take honours in CICERO competition

Two Mill Hill Sixth Form pupils have excelled in this year’s CICERO competition, for students of Latin and Classical subjects worldwide. The contest, now in its 4th year, is an exciting and intellectually challenging competition which was held in March across six European countries – UK (England and Scotland), France, Spain, Italy and Andorra – as well as Tunisia and Australia. The format involves setting up a ‘virtual classroom’ linking centres in participating countries so that the students can see and hear each other. Their task was to translate a passage from Latin and research their common heritage through the topic “Carthage, from Dido to Hannibal”.

The overall winner in the UK competition was Jonathan Bertulis-Fernandes, while Hugh Longley, who was last year’s runner-up, was Highly Commended in 4th position. Both boys finished ahead of very strong candidates from Bristol Grammar and George Watson's College.

Success at British Biology Olympiad

Our congratulations go to Mifthah Ibrahim and Al Stubbs having recently been awarded Highly Commended certificates in this year's British Biology Olympiad.

The British Biology Olympiad (BBO) is an annual competition for post-16 students and is run by a volunteer committee of experienced teachers and lecturers who set and mark the questions. Since the establishment of the BBO in 1995, the numbers of participating students have steadily increased and it regularly attracts about 1500 entrants from all types of school from across the UK. It is designed to challenge and stimulate gifted students with an interest in Biology to expand and extend their talents. In offering a wider syllabus than A-level, it allows gifted students to demonstrate their knowledge and to be suitably rewarded and publicly recognised by the award of medals, certificates and other prizes. It is hoped that competing in the Olympiad will encourage students already interested in this valuable, wide-ranging and rewarding subject to continue their study beyond A-level. Medals are presented to the winners by the BBO President at an annual awards ceremony in London - something to aspire to for 2011!

A busy time for Drama ...

During the past three weeks, more than seventy drama students have given some brilliant drama performances for their AS Level and GCSE exams. The subject matter has been wide-ranging, from the Great War to Sport, Alcohol to Marriage, Drugs to Victorian Hypocrisy, Rhinocerae to Theft. Many of these performances were outstanding and often extremely amusing. If the academic work also goes well, we look forward to some very good results. However, it’s not over till the fat drama teacher sings and an evening of Monologues and Duologues is taking place for AS Level on Tuesday 25th May starting at 5.30pm. Please join us if you can………don’t know if I’ll actually sing, though!

Rounders record breakers

The 1sts rounders team won by a record breaking score on Wednesday, 33.5 rounders to St Albans 8. Mill Hill fired with the bat, hitting over the deep fielders or piercing the gaps in the feild, constantly ticking the score over. Mill Hill were equally as determined in the field, with sharp fielding gaining many outs at posts and fast bowling by Katie Newton. St Albans were all out for 18 balls in the first innings. Congratulations to all the girls who took part in this match. It was a true team effort.

The 2nd senior rounders team also faced St. Albans on Wednesday. Mill Hill won the toss and elected to field first. Player of the match Priya Visavadia bowled very well and the team fielded excellently to get St Albans out after just 23 balls for only 2 rounders. Some good hitting, but lack-luster running meant that 11 rounders were scored by Mill Hill in response. With the game all but over, barring a miraculous 2nd innings batting performance from St. Albans, Milll Hill set their stall out by getting 4 of the St. Albans batting line up out within the first 7 balls. , 3 Ronders and 15 ball later St Albans were all out with a two innings total of 5. With victory assured Mill Hill scored a further 8 rounders in their second innings to make the final score 19-5 to Mill Hill.
